A new born child was found in Nafferton Mere.
A blacksmith had seen a parcel floating in the back. A boy went down and attached a cord to it which some children had said was a parcel of 'old cats'. It was then drawn up and lifted over some railings and one of the children opened up a corner and exclaimed, 'Why it’s a bairn'.
