Baby

Age: 0

Sex: female

Date: 8 Feb 1908

Place: Mere, Nafferton

A new born child was found in Nafferton Mere.

A blacksmith had seen a parcel floating in the back. A boy went down and attached a cord to it which some children had said was a parcel of 'old cats'. It was then drawn up and lifted over some railings and one of the children opened up a corner and exclaimed, 'Why it’s a bairn'.

The blacksmith said that when he had first seen the parcel it was under a willow tree as though it had been washed up there. A doctor said that it was an ordinary brown paper parcel with a tradesman's label on it and tied square.

The lower part of the child was wrapped up in three napkins, two of them white and one coloured. The post mortem found that the child was female and well-nourished with no signs of external injury.
