A newly born female baby was found in a boiler at an old house known as Mitchell Hall Farm in Thornton.

The baby had died from neglect and exposure at birth.

Mitchell Hall Farm had been untennented for that previous 4 years.

The body was found by a farmer who worked on the land as he was showing his uncle over the house in preparation for negotiations for tenanting it. The body was found in a brown paper parcel in the boiler. The farmer said that he kept hens in the building and was last there 5 weeks earlier looking for eggs and said that the brown paper parcel was not in the boiler then.

The door of the building was always open and the windows smashed making it easy for wayfarers to get in.

The medical evidence showed that the child was fully developed and had had a separate existence and had been dead for about 10-14 days.
