Annie Crabtree

Age: 35

Sex: female

Date: 3 Aug 1910

Place: 15 Craven Street, Nelson

Annie Crabtree died from an illegal operation.

Her husband said that she had been living with him as his wife for two years and that she had been a widow after her previous husband had died eight years earlier.

He said that she didn't complain about being ill at all until about midnight on the Tuesday night after they had gone to bed. She had woken him up and complained of being sick and so he got her a glass of water but she seemed to get worse and appeared to be in great pain. The husband went out in the morning at about 9.30am for an hour and when he returned he found the doctor at the house.

They then went to the doctors surgery and after being told something he asked her if she had done anything to herself and Annie Crabtree said 'Aye'. He said that she had never mentioned anything to him about being in a certain condition.

Annie Crabtree was in great pain for the whole day until she died at about 2.30pm.

The doctors opinion was that she had died from blood poisoning. He said that she had been about 4-5 months pregnant and that the abortion had been procured about a week earlier.
