Philip Poru

Age: 18

Sex: male

Date: 15 Oct 2007

Place: Long Walk, Plumstead, South London

Philip Poru was shot as he sat in a silver Ford Fiesta car with friends in Long Walk, Plumstead, south London on 14 October 2007.

He was shot at around 10pm when two black men came up to their car and when they told the men that they were from Peckham one of them pulled out a gun and started shooting at them.

Philip Poru was shot in the chest and died the next day in hospital. Another 18-year-old was also seriously injured but survived.

The police said that they thought that he had been shot with a Baikal handgun.

Witnesses said that they heard some of Philip Poru's friends screaming that they had been shot by a Somalian gang and police later said that they thought the killers had been part of the Woolwich Somalians gang. However, the police said that they didn't think that Philip Poru had been in a gang and that he had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The murder was thought to have been linked to another shooting in the area as well as three stabbings and associated with an escalating war between Somalian drug pushers and other gangs of African youths. It was said that the Somalians were trying to take control of the drug and gun business on the estate from the other African gangs there.

Philip Poru had been a student at the Kingston University where he was studying a joint honours degree in media and cultural studies with television and new broadcasting media.
