The body of a new born female child was found tied up in a brown paper parcel in the Chesterfield Canal near the Hop Pole, Retford.
The Hop Pole was on the side of the wharf.
Evidence indicated that the baby had been in the water for about a night and when it was found it was unclothed and had a piece of cord tied around its neck.
The body was found by a young clerk who worked for Messrs. WH Smith and Sons' bookstall at the Great Northern station as he was crossing the locks.
