The body of a newly-born child was found at Wanstead Flats.

The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition and had a piece of linen forced into his mouth to the back of its throat. He also had lacerations to the angles of his mouth.

It was thought that the linen had been put in the child’s mouth while it was still alive. However, the post-mortem stated that death was not due to asphyxia but due to haemorrhage due to inattention at birth and also the ill-treatment that the child had been subjected to.
