The body of a newly born female child wrapped up in a parcel and tied with string was found on the Midland Railway between Southend and Westcliff Stations.
The police said that the parcel could have been thrown from the bridge, dropped from a train, or thrown over the fence from Scratton Road.
On the back of the child's neck there was a mark as though a cord had been tightly tied and the skull was fractured.
It was thought that the child had been dead for about a week.
