Place: Ilford Station
The body of a newly born female child was found in a railway carriage at Ilford Station.
The body was discovered by a man cleaning the carriages at 4am. He saw a brown paper parcel beneath a seat and when he pulled it out he found the body of the baby.
The train had come from Liverpool Street at 12.18 to Chadwell Heath which it reached at 12.45. The train then returned to the siding at 1.06am. No one else had access to the siding during the night as there were shunters about all the time.
The divisional Surgeon who examined the child's body said that it was wrapped up in brown paper and a linen cloth with some other cloth that appeared to be part of a petticoat which was bloodstained. There was a piece of silk ribbon tied tightly around its neck.
The autopsy showed that the child had had a separate existence and that all its organs were healthy. No food was found in its stomach and death was stated as being due to asphyxia due to strangulation with the ribbon.
