The body of a newly born baby girl was found in the gutter at Fitzroy Place with 106 wounds.
The police divisional surgeon said that the wounds had been inflicted with an instrument like a penknife or the point of a pair of scissors.
Although there were a lot of wounds, death was caused by asphyxia.
Fitzroy Place has since been demolished and redeveloped, but was a small side street opposite Upper Fitzroy Street.
