The body of a male child was found in the River Mersey at Cheadle.

It was found by a constable who was near the L and NW Railway arches at Cheadle on the Saturday and saw the baby floating in the river nude.

The body had a piece of cord knotted around its neck and had been gnawed at by rats.

The doctor stated that the cause of death was suffocation due to strangulation. He said that the child had been strangled and then thrown into the river.
