Robert Jenkins

Age: 31

Sex: male

Date: 24 Jul 1962

Place: New Bridge Street, Newcastle

Robert Jenkins was stabbed outside a pub on the night of 4 May 1962 in Newcastle.

He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Several people were tried but were convicted of lesser offences.

They had been drinking in the public house in New Bridge Street, Newcastle and later attacked three men, including Robert Jenkins, knocking them to the ground, with one of them stabbing Robert Jenkins.

They all pleaded guilty to fighting and causing an affray.

When the judge sentenced them, he said:

You made a pretty savage attack on these men. Both were knocked down and repeatedly kicked. Five of you admit kicking him. And as if this was not bad enough, one of you seven must have the crime of murder on you, for Jenkins was stabbed through the heart and died as a result. Then you ran away.

They were all sentenced to 3 years, however, the judge later reduced the sentence on six of the youths to 2 years, stating that it was unfair to treat them all the same as the one that was cleared of murder and who was described as the ring leader.

The convicted youths were:

  1. Butcher boy, 17, of Silver Lonon, Newcastle, sentenced to 3 years.
  2. Apprentice plumber, 19, of Grasmere Avenue, Newcastle, sentenced to 2 years.
  3. Labourer, 20, of Wigmore Avenue, Newcastle, sentenced to 2 years.
  4. Labourer, 22, of St Anthony's Road, Newcastle, sentenced to 2 years.
  5. Trainee mill operator, 18, of Chatsworth Gardens, Newcastle, sentenced to 2 years.
  6. Apprentice joiner, 19, of Pinner Place, Newcastle, sentenced to 2 years.
  7. Porter, 24, of Mortimer Avenue, Newbiggen Hall Estate, Westerhope, Newcastle, sentenced to 2 years.

Robert Jenkins had lived at Greenhow Place in Newcastle.
