Place: Chesterfield Canal, Brimington

The body of a child was found floating in the Chesterfield Canal at Brimington.

The body was wrapped up in a brown paper parcel and was found by some boys in the canal near the Midland Railway bridge.

When they first opened it, they thought that it had been a fish. They said that the top of the parcel was dry and when they had passed by earlier in the afternoon they had not noticed it.

The body was wrapped in calico which was smeared with blood and wrapped in a copy of the Sheffield Daily Telegraph for 10 May 1911 and then wrapped up in stout brown paper.

It was said that the body could have been thrown out of a railway train but assumed that a person doing that would be someone who knew the locality.

The post-mortem revealed that the child had been dead for about 14 days and had been in the water for some time. From certain indications in the chest and the presence of froth and blood around the mouth it was concluded that death had been by asphyxiation and that the body had been thrown into the water after death.
