Baby

Age: 0

Sex: male

Date: 15 Jun 1900

Place: Conan Road, West Kensington

The body of a baby was found wrapped up in newspaper in the garden of an empty house on Conan Road, West Kensington in early June 1900.

The child had been strangled by means of a piece of tape round its neck.

The Coroner said that he thought that the child had come from the West Kensington district and had probably been born in a 'lying-in' house, noting that the evil was that such houses were not under proper supervision which he had advocated previously before a Royal Commission, and that until some legislation of that sort was introduced the police would have the greatest difficulty in getting a clue.

He added that the child had been the fourth case of its kind that he had investigated that week and that the fact that it was possible for children to be murdered and thrown about in that way was a public disgrace.

The jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.

Conan Road had been just to the south of Edith Villas but has since been redeveloped and is now part of West Cromwell Road.
