John Smith vanished on a train journey from Carlisle to St. Pancras.

He was almost blind from an injury received whilst a serving as a soldier having been wounded during an accident while on sentry duty.

He had been secured a place at the soldiers' blind hospital in Regent's Park by the Carlisle Citizens League and was placed on an express train. However, just before arriving the attendant who had been placed in charge of him noticed that he had vanished. Three other soldiers that had been in the same compartment as him had also vanished.

He had been in the Royal Scots.
