Sex: female
Date: 10 Jan 1903
Place: Wandsworth Common, London
The body of a newly-born female child was found between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Junction Station.
The body was discovered by a gardener wrapped up in a piece of new marble pattern American cloth, a sheet of brown paper, and a piece of sacking. A lady's pocket-handkerchief was also found tied tightly around the child's neck which was marked 'M. Howard' in black ink.
A detective said that extensive inquiries had been made, but so far without result. He noted that as the body had been discovered between Wandsworth Common and Clapham Junction Station that it was not improbable that it had been brought by train.
The Coroner said that unfortunately the case was only one of many similar crimes, but that it was not improbable that the publicity might assist the police in getting a clue.
The Jury then returned a verdict of wilful murder against some person or persons unknown.
