William Joseph James was killed in a riot.
He had gone to work at the Sharpness Docks in Gloucestershire and when he had got there he found that there was a strike in progress.
He had lived in a temporary building in the docks for the non-striking workers and one night whilst going into Berkeley with some of his fellow workers they were attacked from behind a hedge and William James was hit on the head with a piece of iron piping.
He later went home but erysipelas developed from the injury and he went into the Greenwich Infirmary where he died on 25 June 1903.
