Leonard Thomas Pegram was killed during a row outside a pub.

A soldier was tried for his manslaughter but was acquitted.

There had been a row outside a pub between a number of men. The soldier said that someone struck him, and that he and others then chased Leonard Pegram who was running away.

When the soldier caught up with Leonard Pegram he wrenched at his sleeve, but Leonard Pegram ran off and then turned and hit the soldier and then the soldier then hit Leonard Pegram on the shoulder who then fell to the ground on his hands and knees. The soldier said then that someone threw a bottle that hit Leonard Pegram on the head causing Leonard Pegram to lie down crying.

Leonard Pegram died from the head injury. The post-mortem revealed that the injury was caused by a blunt instrument that fractured and lacerated his brain.
