John Fox

Age: unknown

Sex: male

Date: 17 Jan 1916

Place: Carlisle

John Fox died during a quarrel in Carlisle.

A man was tried for his manslaughter but acquitted.

The man who had been a soldier had been wounded in Gallipoli and had approached John Fox and another man and asked them for a match. The other man replied, 'Chaps like you ought to be fighting for your country, not asking for matches'.

They then started to quarrel, and the man said that John Fox, who was in a drunken state, fell as he was aiming a blow at him. The prosecution said that John Fox died as a result of being hit by the man, but the man was found not guilty and discharged.
