Eileen Carter vanished the day after her marriage.
She disappeared in the fog.
They had just been married the day before at Southwark Cathedral. After there had been a party at the bride's house where wedding gifts were exhibited. Everyone was happy and in a festive mood.
In the evening the groom left the room for a few minutes at about 6pm leaving his wife in the sitting room and that was the last that he saw of her.
Friends were informed of her disappearance and when she had not returned by midnight there was genuine alarm and word was sent to the police.
She vanished without taking any money as she had left her purse behind containing several pound-notes and some silver. She also left behind her hat and furs.
The river close to the area was dragged but nothing was found.
Her husband said that they had been engaged for a long time and that if it hadn't been for the war they would have been married two years earlier.
