Sukhwinder Singh was killed when he chased some men that snatched a woman's purse in the street.

The thieves had just snatched the purse of a 28-year-old woman who was walking home from Barking station along Loxford Road at about 6:40pm.

Sukhwinder Singh then chased the men for about 50 to 70 yards along Victoria Road into Uphall Road and when he caught up with them there was a fight and he was stabbed.

He was found lying slumped in the snow in the street and taken to the Royal London Hospital but died the next day. He had been stabbed in the heart.

One of the attackers was described as being black, 5ft 10in to 6ft tall, skinny with a young face and wearing a black hooded top and light grey jogging bottoms. The other attacker was said to be a lighter-skinned black man, 6ft tall, of stocky build with possible facial markings or facial hair and wearing a light blue hooded top with markings on the sleeves.

A woman who lived nearby said that she heard screaming and someone shouting, 'Don't let them run'.

They got away with the woman's handbag and her mobile phone which were not recovered. It was thought that they had been gotten rid of in a garage area near Charlton Crescent about 1.5 miles from where Sukhwinder Singh was stabbed.

The handbag was described as a brown leather shoulder bag and came from India.

During the police investigation five people were arrested but no one was charged.

Sukhwinder Singh was an Indian national and had lived in the UK for the last ten years and was a builder. He was known locally as Bittu.
