The body of a newly-born female child was found wrapped in a paper parcel near the Rectory Gates, Sandon.

The body was found by a milkman who had been driving from Chelmsford to Sandon when he saw a paper parcel in a hedge. He stopped to take a look and found the body and then reported it to the police.

He said that he didn't think that the body had been there two hours earlier when he had passed.

Part of the paper that it had been wrapped up in dated 15 December 1918.

The post-mortem said that death had occurred either immediately or shortly after birth due to failure to establish respiration.
