Date: 28 Apr 1920

Place: 5 Leighton Terrace, Exeter

The body of a newly-born child was found under the bed of a domestic servant.

The child was found in a box beneath a bed used by the woman and had a vest and handkerchief tied tightly around its neck.

The domestic servant had told her employer that she was unwell after having strained herself lifting a piano.

However, she said that she didn't remember tying anything around the child's neck. She said that after the birth she went downstairs and was later taken backup but said she remembered nothing.

The court heard that it could not be ruled out that someone else had killed the child saying that it could not be ruled out there was, beside the woman, some other person who had reason for hiding the affair who had access to the chamber and so the woman was acquitted.
