Baby

The body of a newly born female child was found in Woolley on the Wakefield and Barnsley Road on the afternoon of Sunday 14 November 1920.

 A fam labourer had earlier seen a green taxicab coming from the direction of Wakefield. He said that the driver was wearing a uniform and that on the near side there was a woman. When he returned, he saw three men looking at a pillowslip which wasn't there before. The pillowslip contained the body of a dead child.

One of the men, a miner, said that he had been walking along Mill Lane, Wooley towards the Barnsley Road when he saw a taxicab pass the end of the lane. He said that as he saw it, he saw someone closing the door. Then as they continued along the Wakefield and Barnsley Road, they saw the pillowslip and the baby.

The Coroner said that it was reasonable to presume that the child had been thrown out of the taxicab and that someone had desired to get rid of the child and conceal the fact that it had ever been born.

A doctor said that the child was born alive and that death had been due to inattention at birth.
