Alex Goodric was found dead on the Midland Railway line between Rainham and Dagenham Dock.
He had got on the train at Tilbury Dock to go to Fenchurch. He had been drowsy and so had asked the guard to call him at the end of the journey. He had been travelling in a first class carriage but on arrival his compartment was found to be empty.
The doors were locked and his hat and stick were found in the compartment.
His body was later found on the line and appeared to have been dragged up and down, probably by the train that he had been on and then by a train travelling in the other direction.
When he was found he only had a shilling on him but when he had got on at Tilbury Dock Station he was said to have had a handful of coins.
