J Shehan was seen to jump from a train going at about 60mph on Saturday night 25 September 1920.
He had been in a corridor compartment in which three other men had been travelling who police had tried to trace.
He was seen to jump from the train by a woman in a Wigan Street.
When he was found he was severely injured and died about two hours later at the infirmary.
He had a considerable sum of money in his possession together with a cheque-book.
The train had been a L and NW Railway express from London to Carlisle, and he had jumped out just as the train had got beyond Wigan Station.
It was thought that J Shehan had been a dentist and had been acting as locum tenens at Leek in Staffordshire, but he had only stayed from Thursday to the Saturday.
He was described as middle-aged.
