The body of a newly born male child was found wrapped up in a pillowcase in an outhouse at Ivyhouse Farm on Friday 26 January 1923.
The body was found by a farmer from Ivyhouse Farm on Bucknall New Road, Hanley in the outhouse, after which he gave information to the police.
It was heard that the child had not been there the previous day when his wife had gone to the outhouse.
The police said that they had been unable to find any clue of any kind as to who the parents were.
A divisional police sergeant said that the child had been about 3 days old, and that there was evidence that it had taken food from the mother.
He said that its cause of death was exposure.
