George Edmund Osborn

Age: 53

Sex: male

Date: 30 Dec 1922

Place: Folkestone

George Edmund Osborn was found dead at the bottom of some cliffs.

His body was found on the rocks on Christmas morning. The cause of death was given as drowning.

He had left home in the evening of 24 December 1922 to attend a concert at the Royal Pavilion Hotel Winter Gardens where he had checked his tickets.

After the concert at about 10pm he had gone to see a friend who was the landlord of the George Inn but had left his house between 11pm and midnight after staying for about an hour.

He was found dead the next day on the rocks to the east of Folkestone Harbour by a fisherman.

He had run a boot and shoe business in Tontine Street in Folkestone.

Although he had seemed cheerful when he had left the George Inn the inquest heard that his business had suffered due to a number of other rival boot firms opening up near his shop and that he had also paid out a considerable amount of money due to his wife's illness.

A doctor who examined his body found an abrasion on his chin and a number of bruises on his body and said that he did not think that he could have fallen from the cliffs in the darkness.

One of George Osborn's sons said that his father was quite cheerful on the Sunday night and had told him that he was looking forward to spending Christmas Day with his family.

It was noted that George Osborn's wallet, which he had taken out with him on the Sunday night, was missing when he was found.
