The body of William Peck John Margetts was found in the mud under the bow of a boat west of the pier at Southend.
He was a bricklayer from South Croydon.
He was said by his brother to be of a roving disposition and was an old soldier having served in the East Surrey Regiment during the war.
When the police searched his body they found Army discharge papers and a registered letter containing a medal and ribbons.
