A skeleton was found embedded in the sand at Amble Sands.
It was thought that it could have been there for up to 60 years.
There was no evidence to show the cause of death and no marks of violence to the skull.
The skeleton had been found by a police inspector who had seen a human bone protruding from the sand.
The skeleton was thought to have been that of a man between 30-40 years of age.
The inspector who found the skeleton said that there had been a ship wreck about that spot 60 years earlier and it was possible that some of the crew had got ashore but then perished on the links.
