Louisa Bigg

Age: unknown

Sex: female

Date: 19 Dec 1909

Place: Douglas Buildings, Marshalsea Road, Borough, London

Louisa Bigg was found lying on her stairs bleeding and was taken to Guy's Hospital where she later died.

A man had been seen in her company late on the night before she was found, but he was never traced.

She had lived at Douglas Buildings on Marshalsea Road in Borough, London.

A woman who lived in the same building said that around 12.30am she heard voices from upstairs of a man and a woman quarrelling which lasted until about 1am when she heard a thud followed by the sound of heavy footsteps going down the stairs.

After the footsteps were over she opened her door and heard a man say, 'Are you going or shall I call a policeman'. She said that she could hear groans but that they thought that the woman had fallen down the stairs and was getting better and so she went back to bed but told her husband.

The woman's husband said that at about 1am his wife told him that she thought that she had heard a woman fall down the stairs and he went to look and saw a man on his hands and knees on the landing. He said that when he asked the man what he was doing he had replied, 'All right, guv'nor. I'm going away now'. After the man left he noticed Louisa Bigg lying on the landing and spoke to her but when he didn't get a reply he said he thought she was just very drunk and went back to bed.

The next morning, Sunday 19 December 1909, the woman went to have a look and found Louisa Bigg lying on the stairs bleeding from the head and still alive.

She was taken to hospital but soon died.

An open verdict was returned at her inquest on Thursday 23 December 1909.
