Andrew Wishart

Age: 82

Sex: male

Date: 11 Jul 1923

Place: Saltra, Silloth, West Cumberland

Andrew Wishart was found dead in a ditch.

He had gone to Australia (Antipodes) 60 years earlier and had later returned with a large fortune. When he had left he was a poor man but had amassed a big fortune in farming.

He had returned on a visit and had been residing with his niece in Salta but disappeared after tea on Wednesday 11 July 1923.

His body was found three days later in a ditch with three inches of water. He was lying on his back with his mouth clear of the water.

There was no signs of a struggle but his face was blackened across the eyes.

The niece denied that there had been any arguments and when asked why her husband did not turn out to help carry Andrew Wishart's corpse back she said that he did not like to see a corpse.

A distant relative said that there had been a lot of rumours that there had been a terrible difference at the house.

A policeman said that it was possible that Andrew Wishart had drowned through his ears but that there was no suspicion of foul play.
