The body of a child was found in a suitcase that had been left at Preston Station.

It had been left there on 5 September 1922 as left luggage with the name of Smith being given by the person that left it.

When the suitcase was opened it was found that the child had been mutilated. The head had been severed from the body and the skull had been fractured. There were also other marks of violence on the body.
