Mary Doherty was run over by a car that drove off on 23 December 1922.
The police said that they made inquiries at garages all over Lancashire and Yorkshire in an effort to trace the car but without luck.
After returning an open verdict the jury condemned in the strongest terms the unknown motorist who knocked her down and drove off, describing his conduct as abominable.
The coroner said that the motorists conduct exhibited a callousness almost unbelievable and said that he could not have run Mary Doherty over without knowing it and said that the fact that he had not come forward was evidence of a guilty conscience. He added that it was despicable.
