Catherine Marsh was run over by a taxi.
After running her over the driver sped off and refused to stop.
Catherine Marsh's daughter had heard Catherine Marsh's screams from outside and when she came running out into Kingsland Road she found Catherine Marsh lying in the road.
A man was heard to shout, 'Stop that taxi'. The man said that the car approached him too and he too shouted out for it to stop but the driver just drove off.
He took what he thought was the number of the taxi and said that it was going faster than 20mph.
The inquest heard that at the time the pavements were crowded and that there must have been hundreds of people joining in the shouting for the driver to stop.
A policeman also tried to stop the car and was nearly knocked down himself.
The police were given three different numbers for the car but all three proved to be wrong and it was thought from there that there was no possibility of tracing the driver.
Catherine Marsh had been a widow.
