Age: 0

Sex: male

Date: 24 Feb 1923

Place: 22 Cleveland Square, Bayswater, London

Part of the decomposed body of a child was found in the chimney of a house at 22 Cleveland Square, Bayswater.

The remains were found by a servant girl on 24 February 1923, wrapped up in a woman's nightdress, a duster, a portion of an old camisole, and some paper.

On the nightdress there was the name, 'R Ball', written in marking ink.

It was believed that the name referred to a maid that had previously been employed at the house two years earlier, and who had left in January 1922. She was said to have then gone to Bexhill where she married a sailor and that it was thought that they were then at Devonport, however, no definite information as to their whereabouts could be obtained.

A doctor said that he thought that the child had been dead for between 12 and 15 months.

An open verdict was returned at the inquest in Paddington on Thursday 15 March 1923.
