Baby

Age: 0

Sex: male

Date: 7 Feb 1916

Place: Binley Road, Stoke

The body of a newly-born male child was found in the horse pool on Binley Road.

The body was found by a man that had been walking past the horse pool at around 5pm on the Monday. He said he noticed a parcel in the water and poked it with his walking stick. He then pulled it to the bank and when he removed the brown paper wrapping, he saw a child's leg and so went to call for the police.

When the police examined the parcel, they found that the child had been wrapped up in an apron which had had its waistbands removed in order to destroy its identity. It was noted that the apron was quite new, and it was thought that it had probably belonged to someone in a restaurant, a maid or a waitress.

The doctor said that it was impossible to say whether the child had been born alive but said that he thought it had been born within 48 hours of being examined. He said that there was a bruise over the child’s right eye and another in the centre of its forehead.
