William Michael Machin was found in a ditch.

He was found unconscious suffering from a concussion but didn't regain consciousness before he died.

He had a cut on his head. It was thought possible that he could have fallen over.

After being found he was taken to Chorley Workhouse Infirmary

He was found by a man on Saturday lying lengthways in a dry ditch off the Ollerton Lane.

He was taken to the harness room at Ollerton Fold Farm where a fire was made up for him and then taken by taxi to the workhouse.

Police said that there was evidence that he had dragged himself 50 yards from the main road to the ditch.

William Machin was married to a 29 year old woman who lived on Fern Street in Heywood. She said that he had left her in January 1916 stating that he was not coming back, but she said that he had left her four times previously.
