Martha Edmondson died from an illegal operation.
At her inquest the husband said that he had called home owing to his wife's illness and found a neighbour and two strange people in his house, a man and a woman. However, he said that he didn't know the strangers and didn't ask their names. He said that he wasn't surprised to see them and he also asked them to stay for tea. He said that he did asked the neighbour to introduce them but that she had told him that they were not her friends. He said that they later left and he never saw them again. He admitted to the coroner that he now knew that the police were looking for the two people.
Martha Edmondson was taken to the Lees Infirmary where she later died.
After hearing the evidence of the husband the Coroner said that he had never heard such a story in his life.
A verdict of murder against a person or persons unknown was returned.
