James Collinge Chadwick

Age: 41

Sex: male

Date: 19 Oct 1924

Place: River Thames

James Collinge Chadwick was found dead in the River Thames.

An open verdict was returned.

He had been missing since 8 October 1924 when he was last seen leaving a theatre in London but didn't return to his hotel. his body was later found on 11 October 1924.

He had come down from Yorkshire with a woman with whom he had been living for the last nine years and they had stayed at the Piccadilly Hotel and then after a late dinner went to the Vaudeville Theatre. She said that James Chadwick was depressed because she was going to live in London. she also said that his trade was bad, that he couldn't marry her and that he had been suffering from terrible headaches.

A co-director of James Chadwick said that James Chadwick had gone to London with the idea of renting a flat with the woman that he had been living with.

Before he was found the River Police had been on the look out for the body of a well dressed man who answered his description and having had fallen over the Waterloo bridge around the time that he was thought to have left his hotel.

He had a fractured skull and external wounds on his nose and forehead but it was thought that he could have received the injuries when he got into the water.

At his inquest, it was noted that he had been despondent because his divorce decree had not been made absolute which prevented him from remarrying. However, his friends said that whilst he was despondent they knew of no reason to suspect that that there was any trouble likely to cause him to contemplate taking his life.

He was a wealthy woollen manufacturer from Duna Lodge, Kirby Moorside, Yorkshire.

An open verdict was returned and the cause of death was given as drowning.

He was buried in Brockley Cemetery in Kent.
