Four babies were found buried in boxes and covered in leaves in a garden at a cottage in Ormesby.

They were found two weeks after the woman who lived at the cottage died on 15 September 1924.

The post-mortem showed that they died from haemorrhage.

They had been buried in four different boxes in the front garden.

The woman's husband, a boot repairer, said that the day before his wife died that she told him that there were three children under their bed and one in the cupboard and asked him to bury them.

He said that at the time he had thought that she had been being light-headed but that after her funeral he searched amongst some rubbish under the bed and found three bodies wrapped in a blanket, sack and paper, and one in the cupboard.

He said that he never knew that the bodies were under the bed and that it was a great surprise to him and that he buried them in the garden, and informed two neighbours.

Medical evidence showed that one child, a female under a month old, had a piece of tape tied around the neck. However the sex of the other three infants could not be determined and the doctor said that he could not say that they had been born alive.

The inquest returned a verdict that the children had been found dead, but that there was no evidence to show that they had been born alive.
