Eliza Garrard died at Hackney Infirmary on Friday 23 December 1904.
She had been admitted a week earlier on the advice of a doctor who had attended her for paralysis.
When she arrived at the infirmary a doctor found that she had some bruises about her ankles and heels but there were no signs of any external injuries. However, at her post-mortem it was found that her occiput was bruised and below that there was haemorrhage on the brain. It was stated to have not been a natural apoplexy and that it must have been caused by a blow of some sort to the head and an open verdict was returned.
Eliza Garrard had been a domestic servant and had lived at 44 Powell Road in Clapton with her cousin for some years.
44 Powell Road has since been demolished and replaced with flats, but houses numbered 36 and lower still exist.
