Michael Keegan was found dead in the road at the entrance to Golden Hill Fort with a fractured skull.
He was a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery.
As well as the skull fracture he had a deep wound on the back of his head.
He had been out drinking on the Saturday night with some friends and after lay down in a field where they left him to sleep.
He was found later that night partly undressed in the road. It was suggested that he might have thought that he was back in the barracks and partly undressed and then fallen from a high wall near to where he was found.
An open verdict was returned.
