The head and part of the body of a newly-born child was found in a goyt of the River Derwent.
It was found in the goyt from the River Derwent that provided power to the Masson Cotton Mills.
The foreman of the mill said that the goyt had been cleared out the day before and was certain that there was nothing in it then.
A doctor who examined the child's remains said that he was certain that it had lived and breathed and thought that it had been dead when it had entered the water and that it had been in the water for less than ten days.
The Coroner said that the body had probably been brought down by the floods and that they would probably never know where it had come from.
