Place: Milford Tunnel, Duffield

The body of a newly-born child was found in the Milford Tunnel on the Midland Railway.

The body was found by a platelayer who passed through the tunnel during the exercise of his duty. He said that he had walked through the tunnel in the early afternoon and had not noticed anything but that when he returned at about 4pm he found the child's body.

He said that it was quite nude and that it had terrible injuries about its head and shoulders.

He informed the police and the child's body, which was still warm, was taken to the King's Head Inn in Duffield.

The child was thought to have been only a few hours old but it was not clear whether or not it had been born on the train as it was in motion but thought that it had been thrown from a down train headed towards Belper.
