The body of a newly-born child was found in the Nottingham and Grantham Canal lodged in a fallen tree branch on 30 December 1907.
The body was found by two boys who had been playing in a plantation about half a mile from Grantham. When they removed the body they found that its head was missing.
They told the police and the body was taken to the Harlaxton Inn where it was examined. The head and neck were missing and it was thought that portions had been eaten by rats.
A doctor said that the body was much decomposed and had probably been in the water for about three months.
