Elizabeth Finlay and Doris May Finlay were found drowned in a canal.

A man was detained on suspicion of causing their deaths but was no evidence was brought against him and an open verdict was returned.

The Coroner heard how Elizabeth Finlay and her daughter had left the Wigan Hippodrome together on the night of Wednesday 5 August 1925 and that they had then gone to various pubs together after which they were later seen near the canal bank.

However, the man said that he left them at the canal bank and went home.

The man refused to attend the Coroner's inquest and stated via his solicitors that he could not be forced to do so without a Home Office order.

When he was told that Elizabeth Finlay and Doris Finlay were dead he left his house, jumped in the canal and swam to the other side and back again. however, the Coroner said described it as a silly trick and said that he failed to see how that affected the case.
