Rose Jones was found unconscious on the roadside between Monmouth and Hereford near to Callow Hill.
She was discovered by two motor-cyclists in a pool of blood at the top of the hill. Shortly after they were joined by Rose Jones's husband who said that he had only been away from her for a short time.
She was taken to the Herefordshire General Hospital by the motor-cyclists where it was found that she was suffering from a severe wound to her scalp about seven inches long and about half an inch wide.
She never regained consciousness and died a short while later.
The police said that they didn't think that the wound was caused by an assailant, rather that she had been knocked down by a passing vehicle. A quantity of her hair was found further down the road.
Rose Jones and her husband were hop pickers.
