Matthew Barras was found dead in the sea at Newbiggin.
He had been to the Morpeth Olympic Games where he was thought to have won some money on the £100 foot handicap. However, when he was found he only had a few coppers in his pockets.
The post-mortem showed that he had a haemorrhage in the brain that had been caused either from a fall or a blow after which he had drowned.
He was a signalman and was shortly to be married.
