Ethel Florence Richards

Age: 35

Sex: female

Date: 9 Feb 1927

Place: Trull Road, Taunton, Somerset

Ethel Florence Richards was found injured in the road having come off of her bicycle.

It was thought that she might have been knocked over and thrown from her machine by a green car which was seen driving away soon after.

The back wheel of her bicycle was completely smashed.

No one saw the accident.

The man that found her stated that he had heard a crash and then a scream and that shortly afterwards a closed motor-car passed him in which men were singing.

The police later traced the driver of a car who had been returning to Taunton at about the time of the accident with a party of footballers, but both he and his passengers denied any knowledge of a collision and the jury came to the conclusion that that car had not been responsible for the accident.

Ethel Richards did not regain consciousness before she died.

An open verdict was returned at her inquest with a rider that cyclists should be compelled by law to carry red rear lights at night.
